Philippines International Air Transport

Philippines international air transport becomes more and more important. In 2006 , the airport handled nearly 18 million passengers. This was an 10.6% growth in passenger numbers from 2005 and placing the airport 71st worldwide in terms of passenger traffic.
On October 11 , 2007 , an Airbus A380 MSN009 test aircraft landed in NAIA and demonstrated that it can be used under normal airline operating conditions. At 2:45 p.m., the plane touched down thru NAIA's longest runway, the 3,700-meter long 06/24 runway. Manila is part of the aircraft's test flight technical route.
The larger Terminal 3 , is the newest terminal in the Manila Airport (NAIA) complex. Constructed starting 1997, the terminal is 98% complete as of 2006 . It is one of the most controversial projects the Philippine government has gotten involved in. However, the government hopes to open the terminal in 2008.

International Aiports in the Philippines

Most international carriers deserve Manila (MNL). But there are also direct international flights to other airports in the country. Second hub after Manila is Cebu (CEB). Other airports have from one to ten international flights per week. And there are airports where mainly charter planes land. For example Kalibo (KAL). Korean charter airlines bring hundreds of Korean tourists for their holidays in Boracay. Caticlan airport (for Boracay) is to small for bigger planes. Therefor government has a project to build an entirely new airport. There seem to be similar problems as for NAIA Terminal 3.

Internatinal Airlines deserving the Philippines

The list shows the situation by November 2007. There are airlines that appear and disappear. There are new routes and routes cancelled.
In 2004 there were still direct flights from Zurich to Manila operated by Swiss. After Lufthansa bought Swiss, this flight was cancelled and is now operated by Lufthansa out of Frankfurt. We expect that in the near future there will be more direct flights to and from the USA. In 2007 there is only Northwest deserving Manila out of Detroit and Minneapolis.
