Dengue Cases still Increasing in Metro Manila
The number of dengue cases nationwide rose 99 percent from January to August this year, compared to the cases recorded during the same period in 2009, but health authorities said cases have begun to “level-off ” since last month.

Seventy-eight percent of those who were afflicted with dengue were between one to 20 years old and there were 501 deaths recorded from January to August 28.

Noting the surge of patients who flock to hospitals seeking dengue consultations, the health chief encouraged the public to visit their health centers if they feel the symptoms of dengue as health center experts are also able to manage dengue cases, especially those that do not require hospitalization.

Many dengue cases, if mild, can be managed at home or closely monitored by local health staff in the communities. Not all dengue cases require hospitalization.

Be careful!

Cagayan de Oro: Taxi Drivers get more aggressive
Taxi drivers at Cagayan de Oro's Lumbia Airport get more and more unfriendly and rip tourists.

A metered taxi ride from Lumbia airport to the city center (e.g. the Divisoria) costs about PHP 120.00. But the taxi drivers waiting at the arrival gate of the airport do:
1. not turn on the meter
2. rip the tourists by PHP 300.00
3. often ask the passenger to pay the parking fee at the airport

THIS HAS TO STOP!

The Civil Aviation Authority now has the form below distributed to arriving passengers. In case you should not get the paper, you may print-out the enlarged version. Simply click on the picture below.

We wonder a bit on how it should work. There is no mailing address indicated on the form but 4 phone numbers. Maybe the form is only for you to note the important information.

We encourage you to complain, if you feel abused.

There is also another solution:
Get out of the airport premises on your right hand. Just outside on the road are always up to 10 taxis waiting. We made the lucky experience that these drivers always put on the meter. A fine tipat the end of the journey should encourage them.

Text (SMS) for more rice
Rice is the staple food of the Philippines but the country is not self-sufficient and last year it was the world's largest importer of the grain.

But the Philippines has also been called the texting (SMS) capital of the world, with some 70 million mobile phone users sending up to 300 million messages a day.

And what has the first to do with the second?

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) sees in modern communication technology a vehicle to transport their advices in rice production even to the smallest rice field in the most remote location.

From this month, IRRI scientists led by Roland Buresh plan to use text messaging to send precise management advice and fertilizer recommendations to local farmers by Interactive Voice Response (IVR).

All the farmer has to do is dial a number on his mobile phone, toll free. An automated voice message will then ask him a series of questions to which he should respond by pressing a number on the phone keypad.

Once he has answered all the questions he will receive a text message with recommendations on the amounts, sources and timings of fertilizer applications for his specific rice paddy.

Let's hope that all the farmers may harvest like those below.

German Government introduces Pinoy Style Travel Tax
This week the German government introduced a new travel tax applicable from 01/01/2011. All airline tickets will be charged by an additional EUR 8 to EUR 45.

This means that a ticket from Germany to the Philippines will cost some PHP 2600.00 more. The only difference is that the Germans hit all travelers while the Pinoys hit only their own people.

If you think that you can buy your 2011 ticket now to avoid the new tax, you are wrong. All tickets with travel date of 01/01/2011 or later are already subject to the tax.

Bureau of Immigration reviews personnel performance
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is evaluating the performance of its personnel assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and other ports following numerous complaints from the public of poor service.

The head of BI issued the order after receiving reports that many immigration officers were not in their designated counters even when there were long queues of passengers waiting for their turns to be processed.

The BI also wants a new training module for immigration officers to enhance the service delivery in the country’s various ports.

Let's hope ;-)

Is Tawi-Tawi the new Tourist Spot in the Philippines?
Tawi-Tawi, one of the last islands between Mindanao and Borneo wants to become the new tourist destination of the Philippines.

Tawi-Tawi's governor, Sadikul Sahali, thinks that they now need a serious and aggressive promotion of their tourism attractions, destinations and potentials to get the much needed boost in the tourism field.

Tawi-Tawi will showcase its various interesting tourist destinations and tourism potentials during the celebration of the province’s 37th founding anniversary, “Kamahardikaan”, which is scheduled from September 25 to 27, this year.

[Editor's comment]
The idea is good. Tawi-Tawi and the whole Sulu archipelago are beautiful and can compete with Thailand's islands. But there is still a very, very big security problem in the region. This problem has to be resolved first.
