The Caticlan airport reopens in September for bigger aircrafts, following the order of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to commence initial phase of runway rehabilitation, which involves contouring of the bordering hill.
Recent flight incidents in Caticlan prompted the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to prohibit larger aircrafts of Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Zest Airways from using Boracay’s closest gateway. At present, the airport is limited to one way landing or take-off for smaller planes from SEAIR.

( 2.8 / 19 )The air transportation troubles in Boracay continue!
After the partial close down of Caticlan airport, the main gateway to Boracay Island, also Kalibo airport had to close at least temporarily.
Begin of July, after a new crash of a ZESTair plane on the runway in Caticlan, the airport had partially been closed. (Read our article of July 10).
All flights, except those of SEAIR had since then been diverted to Kalibo, Aklan.
And now Kalibo airport had to be closed - at least temporarily.
The Kalibo Airport was closed 4 p.m. Sunday due to damage in the asphalt overlay at the runway.
Due to bad weather, the asphalt, which is overlaid nightly, did not set properly and could possibly damage planes landing at the airport.
The runway is now being cleaned and repaired, and will reopen at 7 a.m. Monday (maybe...).
The cancelled flights according to Manila International Airport Authority and Cebu Pacific and as of posting, are the following:

( 3 / 16 )The most beautiful volcano in the world, Mount Mayon in Bicol, shows increased activity.
Phivolcs said that the present seismic count is at the same level when a phreatic explosion occurred last August 2008.
Phivolcs had said that the lava pile in the volcano's crater poses danger to the residents at the south east quadrant. Phivolcs explained that a continuous magma activity which could trigger small eruptions would cause the lava pile to detach. Detached lava could then cause pyroclastic flow which would be deadly to residents especially those farmers inside the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.
Phivolcs on July 10 raised Alert Level 2 (moderate unrest) over Mayon Volcano because of an increase in the number of low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, which reportedly indicates the movement of magma beneath the volcano edifice at shallow depth.

( 3 / 15 )A few weeks ago I wrote about the new Paras Sea Cat route from Camiguin to Bohol and how the competition enhances quality.
See here: Competition improves Services
After the Paras Sea Cat had started its service from Camiguin to Bohol, the old Super Shuttle Ferry had been mostly empty on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The reason is simple: For the same fare (PHP 400), the Paras Sea Cat brings passenger in less than half of the time from Camiguin to Bohol.
But Super Shuttle Ferry did not sleep. They lowered the fares from PHP 400 to PHP 200 per pax - but only on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Competition cuts fares!

( 3 / 13 )MANILA: Police across the Philippines were placed on heightened alert Saturday over fears the country's homegrown Islamists could try to emulate the Jakarta hotel bombings, a spokesman said.
The public was also urged to report anyone acting suspiciously or leaving any baggage behind in public places like malls, bus terminals and hotels.
The Indonesian bombings come barely two weeks after three bomb attacks in Mindanao left at least eight dead and over 100 injured. One of the attacks was blamed on the Abu Sayyaf, while the other two were blamed on rogue members of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The Abu Sayyaf, based on remote islands in the Sulu Sea near the sea border with Indonesia, is blamed for the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines and is alleged to be harboring JI militants blamed for the 2002 Bali bombings.MANILA:

( 2.8 / 12 )MANILA: Widespread flooding caused by Tropical Storm "Isang" (international codename: Molave) effectively shut down Metro Manila Friday, despite the center of the weather disturbance being hundreds of kilometers away in extreme northern Luzon.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared a holiday early Friday morning in Metro Manila, later extending it to most of Luzon as flooded roads stopped traffic and caused vehicles to stall.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said northern Luzon could expect up to 78.7 inches of rain within a 24-hour period, leading to potential flash floods and landslides.

( 3 / 15 )ILOILO - KALIBO - ROXAS: Transport groups on Panay Island are scheduled to start Monday morning a two-day strike to protest the continued increase in oil prices and the significant increase in fines for traffic violations.
Be careful when driving because Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said he would order the suspension of the perimeter boundary ordinance, which bars provincial jeepneys from entering the city proper, and allow tricycles and pedicabs to ply the city’s streets if there would be a lack of jeepneys.
The reasons for this strike are:
1) The continued rise in oil prices have pushed down the income of the drivers after the series of rollback in the minimum fare.
2) Increased fines for violations of traffic laws from 300 percent to 9900 percent depending on the violation.
