Can and will the Philippines replace Thailand as a tourism destination
Thailand's tourism is suffering from the political unrest in the country. Currently Thailand's tourism looses over 85 Millions of US Dollars per day.

Raw estimations expect a loss of 40% of tourists in 2009. Where will these people go for vacation?

Why not to the Philippines?

On the positive side the Philippines do have:
- Beautiful beaches (even more beautiful as many Thai beaches)
- A smooth climate
- Outstanding landscapes
- Very kind people
- Low prices

On the negative side the Philippines have to deal with:
- A rather bad traffic system
- Only few real tourist spots
- Lack of punch for development
- Lack of tourism promotion abroad

2009 will show, whether we are able or not ...
:-)

Camiguin is born !
Up in the snow covered Swiss alps in Daillon a black calf is born. Its name is CAMIGUIN.

Let's hope that Camiguin will have the fire in its belly like the island whose name it got. Congratulations to Florence and Dany and thanks to Fritz for his care taking.

Excess luggage
Is the excess luggage fee another revenue generating fee?

On international flights you have 20kg (economy) or 30kg (business) of free luggage. Depending on the airline you will have to pay up to USD 50 for each kilogram of excess luggage for a flight from Paris to Manila.

But did you ever get a cash back of USD 500 when you only had 10 kilograms?

The same problem occurs with domestic flights. Cebu Pacific Air allows only 15kg of free luggage. For every kilogram more you pay PHP 100. But when you travel without luggage, you get a price reduction of PHP 200.

There is something wrong, you should get PHP 1500 cash back.

But other companies are worse: SEAIR only allows 10kg on some routes...

When will the airlines stop this?

Our worst experiences:
KLM
economy from Zurich to Manila, 25kg of total luggage. Excess luggage fee = CHF 5x50 = CHF 250.00
Air France economy from Paris to Johannesburg, 28kg of total luggage. Excess luggage fee = EUR 6x30 = EUR 180.00

Our best experiences:
Thai Airlines
business from Zurich to Manila, 48kg of total luggage. Excess luggage = 18x0 = 0.00 (zero).

PHP 70 million to finance the immediate reconstruction of the market in Naga
NAGA CITY

The national government will release PHP 70 million to finance the immediate reconstruction of the city’s three-story public market whose second and third floors were burned by a fire on Nov. 6-7.

This was announced by Sen. Joker Arroyo and Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya who went here immediately after the fire.

Mayor Jess Robredo said the city would allocate PHP 20 million as counterpart fund for the rehabilitation of the market on a 1.4-hectare lot.

Fire damage has been placed at PHP 100 million.

Built in 1963, the public market was then the biggest in Asia.

Arroyo and Andaya said the urgent reconstruction efforts had the support and approval of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who immediately understood its economic impact in Bicol.

Arroyo, a native of Naga, said this would be the fastest rehabilitation undertaking in the country and, more importantly, a “model for nonpartisan efforts for the common good.”

Andaya, who is also a native son, gave assurance that the funds would be immediately made available.

The city council declared a state of calamity following the fire.

Fire destroys Naga City public market
Our Naga correspondent Ierene informs:

Friday, November 7, 2008 03:43 PM

NAGA CITY: The public market in Naga City, considered the biggest in the Bicol region, was razed by an eight-hour fire at around 11 p.m. last night, destroying at least 1,500 stalls on the second and third floors.

City officials said damage is estimated to reach P100 million. No casualty was so far reported.

Naga City mayor Jess Robredo said that the four-hectare, three-story public market was on fire while the entire city was plunged into total darkness by a province-wide black out.

While still waiting for the official fire investigation report, Robredo theorized that the fire was caused by a candlelight or kerosene-fed lamp in one of the stalls at the second floor, where dry goods and assorted merchandize and grocery items were being sold.

Firefighters from as far as Tabaco City in Albay helped put out the fire. Robredo said that he is going to relocate the stalls along Igualdad Avenue and Prieto Street adjacent to the market while building is being repaired or renovated.

The tropical storm Quinta moves steadily north-west.

In some parts of the Visayas the rainfall had been heavy (e.g. Bacolod, Negros and Roxas, Capiz). Several pump boats had sunken and over 30 people drowned.

A gray worm called Terminal 3
NAIA's Terminal 3 is a gray worm.

Any airport in the Philippines is a firework of colors and advertisements. But Terminal 3 at NAIA is gray. Yesterday we arrived from Kalibo. Our plane got the last docking. We had to walk through a gray tunnel for about half a mile.
