Philippine Tropical Outlook
For Week: DECEMBER 10-16, 2007 [MONDAY TO SUNDAY]

[1] Continued chance of below-average rainfall for the South China Sea
& Western Philippines. This temporary suppressed convection & dry conditions
in this area, which is interrupting the general widespread wet conditions typical
during La Niña may extend up to this week. Confidence: MODERATE.

[2] The passage of a Mid-Latitude Frontal System over Southern Japan
& China's High Pressure Area may continue to bring strong & cool north-
easterly winds accompanied with some rainshowers along Eastern Luzon
(from Batanes down to Bicol Region). This wind system is commonly known
as the Northeast (NE) Monsoon which starts in November and ends in March.
Confidence: HIGH.

[3] Strong Easterly Trade Winds from the Western Pacific Ocean and the
Philippine Sea is expected to bring wet weather conditions across Eastern
& Central portions of Visayas & Mindanao. These conditions are mostly
typical during a moderate La Niña event. Confidence: HIGH.

Nice flight with Thai
I had a nice flight with Thai on December 6, 2007. The flight from Manila to Bangkok had been delayed and I had only 30 minutes to catch my flight to Europe. But in Bangkok a fine lady with a car already waited for me and brought me over to my next plane. A big THANK YOU.

On my flight to Europe we had an encounter of the third kind... OK, it was Santa's Day.

Fine taxi drivers in Manila
Last weekend I've been in Manila and had to take a taxi from Manila Airport to my Makati Hotel. To my great surprise the taxi at the airport was ultra clean. The driver immediately switched on the meter. During the ride we had a fine chat about last week's events and when arrived at my hotel in Makati, the meter showed 105 pesos!

The driver's name is Rodolfo. Thank you Rodolfo.

Same experience I made on my way backt to the airport. I called a taxi outside of the hotel. The taxi was not as clean as the first one but the driver newly was OK and the meter showed 120 pesos when we arrived at the airport,

If Manila's taxi drivers continue to improve their service, Manila will soon become one of the taxi friendliest cities in the world.

Mini "Putsch" in Manila
Dramatically played out on live television, an opposition politician and rebel military officers surrendered to government forces after taking over a luxury hotel in Manila.

"We're going out for the sake of the safety of everybody," Philippines Sen. Antonio Trillanes said.

The senator made the decision to give up after the military peppered the inside of the hotel with tear gas. Live pictures from inside the hotel showed reporters and rebel soldiers covering their faces.

An armoured personnel vehicle was also seen firing into the lobby of Manila's Peninsula hotel and later rammed through the front entrance of the building.

A teary-eyed Sen. Antonio Trillanes 4th, a former Navy lieutenant, said they were ending their resistance to save the lives of civilians still inside the hotel, who included supporters as well as journalists. “We won’t be able to live with our consciences if some of you get hit or get killed in the crossfire.”

President Gloria Arroyo vowed to prosecute the small group of military rebels led by Trillanes and Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim who were arrested after the storming of the Manila Peninsula hotel in Makati City in a brief and failed mutiny. Makati is the country’s financial center.

[Editors comment: This kind of soap opera can only happen in the Philippines. This is why I love this country! ;-) ]

Between Hagibis and Mitag
During the last few days (November 20 thru 27, 2007) we felt like Ulysses between Scylla and Charybdis.

Two depressions came over the Pacific (what a name!). First there was a tropical depression, Hagibis, called "Lando" in the Philippines. It passed north of Mindanao, between Negros and Panay. It was only classified as a Tropical Storm.
Then came Mitag, called "Mina" in the Philippines. Still over the waters it already got the label Typhoon. Both closed in on the Philippines.
