Boracay Sandcastle – a proposal

Boracay Sandcastle Poroposal

Boracay Sandcastle – a funny Love Story with an unexpected happy end.

Our frequent readers know that we had been in Boracay two weeks ago. We usually stayed on White Beach at Azzurro Ristorante near of Boat Station 3.  We had two reasons to stay there. First: the beach around Boat Station 3 had been clean and white. More in the north it had been green from seaweed. Second: The Spritz and the beef carpaccio served at the Azzurro were outstanding.

The first day we saw two young boys building one of Borcay’s famous sandcastles. We already were used to these sandcastles but in earlier years they had been built in the evening and lit by candles. The same evening Simone, a friend, told us that these sandcastles had become a problem. The kids were building the castles to get money from foreign tourists. The kids earned much more than any hard working staff in a hotel because tourists did like the sandcastles and threw around with their US Dollars, New Taiwan Dollars or Korean Wons. Simone told us also that the tourism police tries to stop these kids.

Next day – same beach – same place – same hot sun:

The boys arrived around 1.30 p.m. like the day before

They started to dig sand. Then suddenly some tourists from Singapore arrived and asked if they could build a special sandcastle with a proposal for a friend. The real story is more complicatedly, but would be much too long to tell.

They worked coordinated and very fast. Meanwhile our new acquaintance from Singapore tried to call their friend, to tell him that the work was nearly accomplished.

And really, a few minutes later, the Sandcastle Proposal was perfect. While everybody waited for the couple to be from Singapore, the Malay Auxiliary Police arrived. They asked to destroy the sandcastle. The Singaporeans were shocked and could not convince the police. Fortunately Silent-Garden’s marketing manager, Ierene, could convince the police to wait just a few minutes. It worked. The police didn’t smile much, but did not execute their order.

A few minutes later the couple to get married arrived and the friends were happy with their surprise.

A proposal with a ring and a red rose under the burning sun on Boracay’s White Beach. Hollywood couldn’t have made it better.

The bride to be, Wendy, was sooooo happy.

The future husband could not hide his happyness and his pride.

A few minutes later, the two happy ones destroyed the sandcastle under the observing eyes of the police. The bride to be was happy, the groom to be was happy, the friends were happy, the police was happy, we were happy and the sandcastle builders were happy.

And they lived happily ever after

Epilogue: The kids earned two times 500 Pesos for their work. OK, it might be considered to be art-work. But this is much too much compared with the 300 pesos a worker earns per day of hard labor. The police made a grateful exception, but without Ierene’s intervention in Tagalog, the sandcastle would have gone too early. The language skills of the auxiliary police had not been sufficient to understand the excellent English of the Singaporeans.

Sometimes it’s really more fun in the Philippines!
