Cebu Pacific Turmoil – over 100 flights cancelled

Cebu Pacific Turmoil

The Cebu Pacific Turmoil had started end of last week. An increasing number of passengers found their coming flights cancelled. Nobody knew what had happened. Wild rumours circulated among passengers and airline staff.

116 flights cancelled between May 1 and May 10

The message: In the press, Cebu Pacific explained that the cancellations are part of the “ongoing effort to improve on time performance and reduce inconvenience” of passengers. Noting an “unprecedented level of disruption” to their operations, with passengers experiencing “extended delays and some on-the-spot cancellations,” Cebu Pacific said it would temporarily reduce the number of their flights.
The truth: Cebu Pacific’s flight attendants created a union!

Why does a union disrupt your flights?

You must know that the cabin staff of 5J (the airline code of Cebu Pacific) earns very low wages and has very irregular duty and presence times. An office clerk in Manila earns nicely more than a flight attendant. Even with their permanent smile, flight attendants do have a very high responsibility for their passengers.

The Cebu Pacific staff, now organised in a union, started to delay flights. Their methods are various: delayed arrivals at work, stuck in traffic jams and sickness leaves.

This information had been published in the Inquirer.net but meanwhile has been removed.

There are other reasons for the Cebu Pacific Turmoil. Insiders in the airline industry whisper already for weeks about 5J’s problems. The only question now is: When will Cebu Pacific tell the full truth?

What can you do if you are hit by the Cebu Pacific Turmoil ?

  • Affected passengers have the following options:
  • rebook their flights within 30 days from original departure date for free
  • reroute to and from alternate airports within 30 days
  • get a full refund
  • place the full cost of the ticket in a Travel fund
  • Passengers of canceled flights will receive a round-trip voucher which they can use for future lights, the airline company added.
  • It also vowed to continue to “exhaust all means to inform passengers as early as possible on any flight schedule changes.”
  • Cebu Pacific said it would inform its affected customers via e-mail addresses and mobile numbers provided on booking and that the passengers would no longer need to go to the airport, managing their bookings online instead.

List of the cancelled flights

This is the official list published by 5J. Please be aware that even a flight that is not listed, may be cancelled. Plan your flights carefully and give enough spare time for the case that just your flight will be hit. Other domestic airlines are here. In extreme situations you may charter a plane.

About time staff were given honest and decent wages that they can live on, and regular work practices, and hours. I will guarantee executives of the company are paid well above average by comparison and have nothing like the punishing hours the attendants and perhaps some other staff work.

    I agree with you.

After awhile the company will feel the hurt and “hopefully” decide to do the right thing.

It will also help the flight attendants if future passengers would book with other airlines which will hurt Cebu Pacific’s profits even more.
