IEC welcomes the Philippines as member

Geneva, Switzerland, 2008-09-23
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is pleased to welcome the Philippines as its 72nd member country. This brings the total number of countries participating in the IEC Family to 154 – 72 Members and 82 Affiliates from developing countries – encompassing more than 95 % of the world population.

The Philippines join as Full member. Full membership grants countries the right to participate in all IEC’s standardization activities, including the right to vote on all technical and management matters. It also gives them access to all IEC International Standards and documents.

The Philippines have a population of 92.7 million and an estimated electricity production of some 53.67 billion kWh (based on 2005 estimates). The Philippine archipelago, composed of 7 107 islands, measures 300 000 sq km. Its principal exports are semiconductors and electronic products, transport equipment, garments, copper products, petroleum products, coconut oil and fruits.

[Editor’s comment:] Being a former IEC officer, I hope that the Philippines will adopt the IEC standards. This would dramatically improve the security of electric installations and allow local industry to export their products worldwide.
